Brian Tracy - Success In America
Summary
- Your own world is an expression of the way you think. The way you think determines how successful you are.
-
There are three basic laws showing that thinking determines your future:
- Law of belief
- Law of expectation
- Law of correspondence
- The law of belief simply says that whatever you believe becomes your reality. You always act and think consistent with your beliefs. Believe creates the actual fact and they are expressed in your actions and behavior. Since most beliefs are taught on an early age they can be changed easily.
- You're not what you think you are, but what you think - you are.
- A consequence of the law of belief is that what you say, wish, hope, write or pledge doesn't count.
- Self limiting beliefs determine everything that happens to you. So challenge yourself often!
- Excuses are real sabotages of your potential. Other people with the same limitations as you did make it nonetheless, so excuses don't hold water.
- The law of expectation says that whatever you expect with confidence will become true. This is also called the self fulfilling prophecy. You sell your own future by telling people what you think is going to happen. People with a positive attitude expect to win and surprise - they are!
-
Your expectations are influenced by four factors.
These are the expectations of:
-
Your parents.
Say: "You are going to do wonderful things in your life!" Identify all negative influences and decide to get rid of them finally and forever! -
Your boss (or the people you look up to).
Obey this rule: never work for a boss with negative expectations! -
Your children (or the people who look up to you).
Say: "I believe you are going to do great things with your life. I know you can do it. I believe in your ability." -
Yourself.
You cannot rise any higher than you expect you can, therefore expect the best.
-
Your parents.
- The law of correspondence simple says "as within so without". Your outer world will correspond with your inner world. Your outer world is a mirror of yourself. You are everywhere! To change your outer world you need to change the way you think.
- Self concept is a combination of all your beliefs. It's your master program. Self concept perceives and predicts the level of effectiveness in everything you accomplish. It also says that inner change must precede outer change. This is an automatic process.
- Effectiveness equals self concept equals your beliefs equals subjectiveness. Thus self concept can be developed.
- Your effectiveness is determined by the average self concept of all areas in your life. This is your comfort zone. When you get above your comfort zone, your fear of failure grows. Contrary, when you get below your comfort zone, your fear of rejection grows. Therefore you cannot perform above your self concept level.
- Other people are not better than you, they are not smarter, they don't have more talents, they just use more of their ability than you have been using until now.
- Many of your beliefs are based on accidental data that has been put in. It is nonsense to try only once and then to stop on the first failure. Nothing is more difficult than you think it is.
- The comfort zone parallelizes you. Whenever you go outside this comfort zone you will show counterbalancing behavior to return as quickly as possible. Therefore leaders always force themselves to stay out of their comfort zones by continuously setting higher and higher goals.
-
Ingredients for self concept are:
-
Self ideal.
These are your goals, values and admirations. You shape yourself to the people you admire. -
Self image.
This is your inner mirror. Alter your subconscious for upcoming events. -
Self esteem.
This is your core or root for what you feel and what your emotions are. You gain self esteem from things you like while you protect your self esteem against things you do not like. It is the average of how much you like yourself in all areas of your life.
-
Self ideal.
- Frequently repeat the words "I like myself!" to raise your self concept.
-
You keep your self concept up by making a vicious circle. These are the steps:
- Set challenging goals.
- Accept responsibility.
- Improve yourself. Self esteem is not possible without self efficacy. Think to give your self esteem a short boost and immediately act on it to gain more self efficacy.
- Visualize positivity.
- Talk positively. No matter what anyone says, you are still a valuable and worthwhile person.
- Act as if you already were the person you want to be, and get the feeling associated with it.
- The principle of reversibility says that you can only have for yourself what you give to others as well.
- There are no limits on what you can accomplish!
